The History of Prom
In the United States and Canada, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal (black tie) dance, or gathering of high school students. It is typically held at the end of junior and/or senior year.

The prom was inspired by the debutante ball where wealthy families presented their daughters who had come of age to the society in which they lived and entertained. The history of the formal dance for young ladies began in the 1800s.

The History of Prom Dresses
High school yearbooks offer a record of the dresses worn to proms across the country. In the post-WWII era of the 1950s, prom dress became elaborate ball gowns with yards of net made into many layers for a very full skirt. The bodice was strapless with ruched net sprinkled with sequins and beads. Originals in good condition are collectors items today.
