The History of Prom
In the United States and Canada, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal (black tie) dance, or gathering of high school students. It is typically held at the end of junior and/or senior year.

The prom was inspired by the debutante ball where wealthy families presented their daughters who had come of age to the society in which they lived and entertained. The history of the formal dance for young ladies began in the 1800s.
